Why make HIATUS?

By: Ashley Reyes

Art has always been part of my life and a safe haven for me for as long as I can remember. I learned about poetry, watercolor and sketching at the age of seven.  My late grandfather gave me a book (I wish I knew the name to it) that had watercolor painting of various landscapes and charcoal pencils. I taught myself to recreate the pictures using shapes and fell in love with drawing and art since that day.

Three years later, my mother handed me a poetry book, by Edgar Allan Poe, and found solace in his works that mirrored my pain. I filled notebooks, papers and letters with poems that reflected my emotions throughout my lifetime.

As I became an adult, I found refuge in art and poetry. I consider it part of my lifeline and always wondered if there were others that felt the same. Luckily, I came across various artistic organizations, teams and artists that shown me the world of creativity and how vast it can be.  Time after time, I found myself traveling to other places to meet fellow artists outside of my hometown of the South Bronx. I wished for a place that fellow artists and poets can meet  to showcase work, perform and exchange the love of art with the community around them. Thus, the idea for HIATUS Art Gallery was created.

HIATUS Art Gallery is a pop-up art gallery that I hope to bring artists of all mediums and walks of life together. It is made to cultivate conversations, relationships between artists, poets and those that share of love between the two.  The special aspect about HIATUS is that it is especially a space for emerging artists and poets that are looking for a space to showcase their talents. I’ve found that many places are focused on established artists. I hope that HIATUS art gallery will be a utopia of creative persons who are new and want to start showcasing art for experience!
